Accelerated Productivity Growth Offsets Decline in Resource Expansion in Global Agriculture AgEcon
Fuglie, Keith O..
Rapid increases in agricultural commodity prices during 2006-08 raised concerns that agricultural productivity growth may not be keeping up with increasing demand for agricultural commodities. ERS has developed a new index of total factor productivity (TFP) in global agriculture to provide a more comprehensive understanding of longrun sources of agricultural output growth. ERS research shows that the average rate of growth in global agricultural TFP has accelerated in recent decades and accounts for an increasing share of growth in agricultural production. Faster TFP growth has offset declining growth in agricultural land, labor, and other resources, although TFP growth across countries and global regions remains unevenly distributed.

Access to Affordable, Nutritious Food Is Limited in “Food Deserts” AgEcon
Ver Ploeg, Michele.
A small percentage of U.S. households live in “food deserts,” where access to a supermarket or large grocery store is a problem. Low-income households often leave food deserts to shop where food prices are lower. Business costs, along with characteristics of potential customers, affect where stores locate.

Access to Local Agriculture and Weight Outcomes AgEcon
Berning, Joshua P..
Recent studies examine the impact of the built environment on health outcomes such as obesity. Several studies find for certain populations that access to unhealthy food has a positive effect on obesity, whereas access to healthy choices has a negative effect. Given the growth and popularity of locally grown food, we examine how individual weight outcomes are affected by access to direct-to-consumer local food. After controlling for potential endogeneity, we find that greater access to local food has a negative association with individual weight outcomes. We also find a negative association with greater weight loss over a one-year period. These results provide evidence that local food access can have potential indirect benefits.

Accessing other people’s technology for non-profit research AgEcon
Nottenburg, Carol; Pardey, Philip G.; Wright, Brian D..
As patents and other forms of intellectual property become more pervasive in the next generation of biotechnologies, designing policies and practices to ensure sufficient freedom to operate (i.e., the ability to practice or use an innovation) will be crucial for non-profit research agencies, especially those intent on developing technologies destined for commercial release. Are non-profit organisations exempt from intellectual property claims? What constitutes infringement of a patent? How does a non-profit establish its freedom to operate? We address these issues in this paper and evaluate various options for accessing other people’s technologies. Options include crosslicensing agreements, research-only or cost-free licences, market segmentation...

Accommodating covariates in receiver operating characteristic analysis AgEcon
Janes, Holly; Longton, Gary M.; Pepe, Margaret S..
Classification accuracy is the ability of a marker or diagnostic test to discriminate between two groups of individuals, cases and controls, and is commonly summarized by using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. In studies of classification accuracy, there are often covariates that should be incorporated into the ROC analysis. We describe three ways of using covariate information. For factors that affect marker observations among controls, we present a method for covariate adjustment. For factors that affect discrimination (i.e., the ROC curve), we describe methods for modeling the ROC curve as a function of covariates. Finally, for factors that contribute to discrimination, we propose combining the marker and covariate information, and we...

Accreditation in Australian agriculture – on the right track or are farmers lost in the maze? AgEcon
Richards, Christine L.; Morgan, Christopher K.; Baldwin, Basil J..
The practices products and resource management of Australia’s farm managers and their environmental consequences are being closely scrutinised by the community. Accreditation is an approach increasingly being used to monitor these matters across agricultural industries. Quality Assurance and Environmental Management Systems have gained prevalence as a means of validating activity and providing evidence of meeting stewardship responsibilities. This paper reviews the range of programs and systems available to primary producers across Australia. In this review it is argued that the growth of these accreditation systems has given rise to confusion, duplication, and increased management and industry costs, with limited assurances to customers and the community...
